It’s been a while! Welcome back to another CRYO dev blog. A lot has changed since the last blog, so let’s dive in.
WARNING: Spoilers for CRYO ahead
Everything is subject to change!
Give us progress!
For those who read the last update, you will be aware that we decided to completely scrap and remake our lower section of the level. That level is pretty much completed now and we’re ironing out some bugs from testing internally. Let’s have a look at how those blockouts have changed.
As you can see, things have changed quite a bit! We’re really happy with how quick the progress was since the blockouts. Here’s a few more screenshots of previously unseen areas on the lower level.
Vents
Vents existed in the previous iteration of the lower level, but we weren’t happy with them.
As part of the overhaul, we also re-worked how the vents function. Previously, they were more like low-ceiling tunnels that you could crouch walk through. This didn’t really feel as claustrophobic and intimidating as we wanted it to. We have instead gone with a custom animation approach instead. When approaching vents crouched, you will now go into a crawling animation to fit inside vents. On top of this, one of the monsters will be able to make use of the vents as well. It has in-vent kill animations.
Sound Work
We’ve been hard at work implementing a variety of audio scenarios to ensure every moment in CRYO is as terrifying as possible. From the distant creaks of unstable structures to the unsettling wind leaking outside, our sound design is being crafted to keep players on edge. Dynamic audio reacts to player movement and environmental changes, making every step feel uncertain. We’re pushing every detail to heighten the tension and fully immerse players in the horror of CRYO.
So if the first level is mostly done, does that mean it's coming soon?
It’s true, the first level is mostly done and we’re just ironing out some bugs, fixing balance issues and some other smaller bits. We’re sure everyone is curious as to when they can try out CRYO.
We’ve made the decision to hold off on the release of CRYO until we have completed the first two levels. The reasons for this are as follows:
- More time to refine gameplay elements
- More content for players at release to play and give feedback on
- If a player dislikes one map for some reason, they may enjoy the other
- More replayability (achievements, collectibles etc)
- Less chance of players being burned out early on from a lack of content
For those reasons, we’re currently midway through the work on the second map. Here’s a sneak peak!
So that ends this short but sweet dev blog. Hopefully it satiates the hunger for CRYO updates a little!
Reworked map looks so much better! Can’t wait for this to be released!
